[CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE...]
My artistic training and pursuits continue to follow a convoluted
path towards some ever-receding destination. Although a few of
my early paintings suggested promise, I was inconsistent in my
expression and technique. My art first began to mature while I
studied under Kathy Ross, who was at that time, teaching drawing
in evening classes at the Milwaukee
Art Museum. There, I continued to study in classes
taught by a number of instructors.
Prior to those classes, my college education included a course in
"History of Asian Art", taught by a professor who had studied
painting in Japan. This class, for which I registered on a whim,
proved to be quite influential to me. I was, and still am,
inspired by the confident, unalterable lines made by brush and ink.
By such a simple method, the brushwork creates a marvelously, rich
impression of the subject.
Later, I found myself desiring to learn how to paint
in this manner. While in San Francisco, I studied Chinese painting
for almost two years at Joseph's Fine Art School (125 Clement St,
San Francisco, CA, phone: 415-387-7138), and now that I live on the
East Coast of the USA,
I am continuing my studies with the Chinese artist Mu Jiashan.
My Chinese brush paintings continue to improve, and I hope eventually
to include some here. Never-the-less, I often
find that they are influencing my other painting and drawing
styles. Where this path will lead in the future, however, is
anyone's guess, but an earlier
page on this tour discusses more about my art techniques.
